aquilo Ix

AQUILO IX is a design born with the aim to compete in the European Rocketry Challenge (EuRoC), specifically in the 3-kilometre category where we aim to reach as close to an 3000 meter apogee as possible. It has some major changes in comparison with the previous generations of AQUILO rockets as well as many different innovations, at least one for each department. There have been static fires for ASTNAR, our engine, but AQUILO IX has not been launched yet. It is expected to fly in May 2026

AQUILO IX incorporates a series of key advancements aimed at improving performance, reliability, and system integration across all subsystems. The addition of the ASTNAR-170-k engine is one of the most important improvements. It marks a change in the propulsion system for our team, as it is our most powerful engine ever. Therefore, extra safety procedures have been established.

At the same time, a telemetry system has been fitted to make sure that data is collected and can be analysed after flight. This advancement allows for improved monitoring and analysis. This progress makes it easier to keep an eye on things, evaluate them and have a better understanding of the rocket's behaviour. With the data collected, the team can improve with every launch as well as learn for future projects.

AQUILO IX adds a boattail shape to the nozzle section, which reduces drag and makes the whole flight more efficient from an aerodynamic and structural point of view. Additionally, the inclusion of active airbrakes provides greater control over the rocket’s apogee. This ensures we do not reach a higher apogee than aimed for.

These new ideas are a big step forward for the AQUILO Rocket Team. They fit with the team's goal of always getting better and complete our step forward required for EuRoc as a team. The first flight is set for the 29th of May 2026.
